Russia is preparing for parliamentary elections on September 20, 2026, with the United Russia party aiming to secure the highest number of votes in every federal region. While the outcome is widely seen as predetermined, the process still holds significance for gauging public sentiment. Background

The United Russia party has long been the dominant political force in Russia, consistently securing majorities in legislative elections. Critics often point to the party's strong control over the political system, leading to widespread perceptions that election outcomes are largely managed. Despite this, some outlets, like meduza.io, raise questions about the role of protest votes and their potential, even if symbolic, impact within this tightly controlled environment. The upcoming vote will determine if United Russia can achieve a clean sweep across all federal subjects.
